About Us

Game Engagement, Analysis, and Research (GEAR) is a student organization geared towards the analysis of video games and the success of students doing research about the video game culture.

Our mission is to explore and research how games function as cultural and rhetorical objects across a number of contexts, from political campaigns, public service uses (such as curbing gang violence), the “serious games” movement that aims to use games for educational purposes, and the emergent form of literary games (an extension of interactive narratives). In this exploration, we will produce conference presentations, research papers, multi-media and interactive presentations, and more to further understand how the rhetorics of games interact with human decision-making and what these interactions can teach us about new modes of digital persuasion, production, and communication.
